A while back I wrote a blog, "Why have I been told I stink?" Yep, I know, not the most flattering title - but my mom, a great fan of White Linen (don't worry, it's a generational thing), tells me constantly. I decided to take the time and explain my position in great detail, in the hope she'd read it and possibly stop asking me why I don't wear perfume.

Turns out there's a good reason "fragrance" on a label isn't what any of us were taught to think it is. It sounds like one ingredient. Rose, maybe. Vanilla. It evokes memories, marketing, an illusion of something simple and pretty, or bold and exotic.

It's not one ingredient. It's a legal umbrella term.

The scary part isn't that "fragrance" is vague. It's what it can legally be vague about - sensitisers, disruptors, things that actually do something to your skin and your hormones. And we'd have no way of knowing. That's not an accident. That's the whole point of the word.

So here's what we need to actually look for:

🚩 "Fragrance" or "Parfum" anywhere on the list

🚩 "Natural fragrance" - still doesn't have to tell you what's in it

✅ Fragrance-free means exactly that. Nothing added for scent. Full stop.

Save this one. Next time you're flipping a bottle over in a shop, you'll actually know what that word is hiding.
