🦷 GUM RECESSION: WHEN YOUR GUMS START “MOVING BACK”

Ever wondered why some teeth suddenly look longer than they used to? 👀
It could be gum recession.

Gum recession happens when the gum tissue gradually pulls away from the tooth, exposing part of the tooth root. And unlike the crown of your tooth, the root isn’t protected by enamel, making it more vulnerable to sensitivity and decay.

So, what makes gums retreat?

🪥 Brushing too hard
Your teeth aren’t pots that need aggressive scrubbing. Excessive pressure can traumatise the gumline over time.

🦠 Gum disease
Plaque and tartar can trigger inflammation and, in more advanced cases, damage the tissues and bone supporting the teeth.

🧬 Genetics
Some people naturally have thinner gum tissue, making recession more likely.

🦷 Tooth position
Teeth positioned outside the ideal boundaries of the supporting bone may have less gum coverage.

😁 Orthodontic treatment
Certain tooth movements can contribute to recession, particularly when the gum tissue is already thin.

⚠️ Repeated trauma
Habits or objects that repeatedly rub or irritate the gum can contribute to localised recession.

🚨 Signs to watch for

• Teeth appearing longer
• Exposed-looking roots
• Sensitivity to cold or sweet foods
• Notches near the gumline
• Changes in the position of the gumline

The good news? Gum recession is often manageable when the cause is identified early. Gentle brushing, good plaque control and regular dental examinations can help protect your gums.

Your gums aren’t just framing your smile. They’re part of the support system keeping your teeth healthy. 🦷✨

🦷✨ CALCULUS REMOVAL | Behind the clean

A closer look at professional calculus removal using ultrasonic scaling. What you’re seeing is the removal of hardened deposits that cannot simply be brushed away at home.

🧠 Did you know?
• Calculus forms when plaque absorbs minerals from saliva and hardens.
• Once hardened, it cannot be removed effectively with a toothbrush.
• Calculus can provide a rough surface that allows more plaque to accumulate.
• Removing calculus helps make it easier to maintain healthy gums and teeth.
• Regular brushing and cleaning between the teeth helps reduce plaque before it has the chance to mineralise.

✨ Healthy teeth aren’t just about having a bright smile, they’re about keeping the gums and supporting tissues healthy too.

“What looks like a simple clean is actually a pretty fascinating bit of dental science 🦷✨ Removing calculus isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about protecting the gums and maintaining a healthy oral environment. Because apparently even our teeth decided to grow their own little cement.”

* 🧪 Calculus is hardened plaque. Once plaque mineralises, brushing alone can’t remove it.
* 🦠 Calculus creates a rough surface where more plaque and bacteria can accumulate.
* 🩸 If calculus builds up along the gumline, it can contribute to gingivitis, causing red, swollen or bleeding gums.
* 🦷 Professional scaling uses specialised instruments, including ultrasonic scalers, to break up and remove deposits.
* ✨ Regular brushing and flossing help prevent plaque from hardening into calculus in the first place.
* 🧬 Not everyone forms calculus at the same rate. Saliva composition, oral hygiene and where your salivary glands release saliva can all influence it.

PLAQUE AND TARTAR — WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Let's talk about something that many people see on their teeth but may not fully understand.

Plaque is a sticky film that can build up on your teeth throughout the day. Regular brushing and cleaning between your teeth can help remove it.

When plaque is not effectively removed, it can harden and become tartar. Once tartar has formed, it cannot simply be brushed away with a normal toothbrush. This is where professional oral hygiene care becomes important.

Tartar can accumulate around the gumline and make maintaining good oral hygiene more difficult.

The good news? Your daily habits matter. ❤️

🪥 Brush your teeth consistently.
🦷 Clean between your teeth.
💧 Maintain good oral-hygiene habits.
👩🏽‍⚕️ Seek professional oral hygiene care when needed.

At Oral Hygiene with Ncediswa Mrwebo, we are here to help you understand your oral health and provide professional care that supports your daily routine.

Don't wait until you notice a problem before you start paying attention to your smile.

Have you ever noticed a little blood when brushing or flossing and thought, “It’s probably nothing”?

You're not alone. Many people ignore bleeding gums because they assume it is normal. However, bleeding can be a sign that your gums need attention and should not simply be dismissed.

Your gums play an important role in supporting your teeth, so looking after them is just as important as looking after your teeth.

Good oral hygiene includes:

🪥 Brushing properly and consistently
🦷 Cleaning between your teeth
💧 Maintaining good daily oral-hygiene habits
👩🏽‍⚕️ Getting professional oral-health guidance when needed

If you regularly experience bleeding, sensitivity, swelling or other changes in your gums, don't ignore them. A professional assessment can help you understand what may be contributing to the problem and what steps you can take to improve your oral hygiene.

At Oral Hygiene with Ncediswa Mrwebo, our goal is not only to provide professional care but also to educate you about your mouth and help you develop better long-term habits.

Your gums deserve attention too. ❤️
