Let us talk about what lifting actually means for your skin.

When a formulation claims to lift, the question becomes: is it working on the surface or reaching the layers where real change happens?

Skin loses firmness when the deeper layers, the dermis where collagen and elastin live, start to produce less of both. This is not about dehydration or surface texture. It is about structural support beneath the surface.

Most formulations stop at hydration. They plump temporarily but do not address the underlying loss of structure. The formulations that do? They are designed with pharmaceutical precision, not just marketing claims. They work at a cellular level, supporting the biological processes that keep skin firm and resilient over time.

Understanding this changes how you choose formulations. It separates effective skincare from expensive disappointment.

We have broken down the science of lifting vs firming on the SkinMiles blog. Read it here: https://bit.ly/4ag0yvw

What has been your experience with formulations that claim to lift or firm? Have they delivered on their promises? Let us know in the comments.

As May draws to a close, the most important thing we want to leave you with is this: understanding your skin is the beginning of looking after it well.

Everything we have shared this month: the biology of collagen, the hormonal changes of the menopausal transition, the case for a more precise and deliberate skin journey, is in service of one goal: helping you make informed decisions about your skin.

If the next step for you is a personalised consultation, we are ready when you are.

We have spent this month in some of the most important territory in skincare: the changes that happen to skin after 40, the hormonal factors that drive them, and the evidence-based approaches that actually help.

Before we close out May, we want to hear from you.

What has your skin journey taught you this month? Has something shifted in how you understand what your skin needs? Is there a question you've been sitting with that we haven't addressed yet?

We read every comment. And if there is a topic that keeps coming up, it shapes what we cover next.

Your skin journey matters, and so does your voice in this conversation.

In skincare, intensity is often mistaken for effectiveness.

In reality, persistent burning or flushing can indicate that the skin barrier is under pressure.

A considered approach supports better long-term outcomes:

Introduce actives gradually
Observe how your skin responds
Adjust with intention

Consistency tends to deliver more reliable results than force.

Your skin is changing, and it is not your imagination.

That firmness you remember from a few years ago is tied to collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep skin lifted and resilient. Over time, your body produces less of both. From your mid-twenties onwards, collagen production declines by approximately 1% each year. By the time you reach your forties, the decline becomes visible.

But here is what most people do not realise: lifting is not the same as firming. One addresses volume loss in the deeper layers. The other addresses texture and density at the surface. And the formulations that deliver real results work at the cellular level, not just the surface.

This month, we are breaking down the science of skin lifting on the SkinMiles blog. What your skin actually needs. Why some formulations work and others just sit on the surface. And how to build a skin journey that supports you as your skin matures.

What a well-edited skin journey looks like after 40, from Dr. Alek.

In clinical consultations, I often see patients in their forties and fifties arrive with extensive collections of products, most of which are working against each other, or simply not relevant to where their skin is right now.

Mature skin doesn't need more. It needs precision.

After 40, your skin's priorities shift. Supporting collagen synthesis matters more than ever, and so does protecting what you already have from UV-driven breakdown. Addressing hormonal pigmentation requires different actives to those used for sun-induced marks in earlier decades. Maintaining barrier function becomes the foundation from which everything else works.

A well-edited approach starts with: a gentle cleanser that doesn't strip; a vitamin C serum each morning; daily broad-spectrum SPF; a retinoid introduced gradually in the evening; and a moisturiser appropriate for your skin's current condition.

That structure, consistently applied over weeks and months, produces more visible results than a complicated ten-step approach that changes every time a new product captures your attention.

What does your current skin journey look like? We're genuinely interested.

Complete Winter Barrier Support: Why Serra Addresses What Your Skin Actually Needs

Winter barrier stress requires targeted support addressing two simultaneous challenges: reduced lipid production and accelerated moisture loss. Understanding this dual deficiency explains why single-focus products often disappoint during colder months.

When I recommend winter barrier support, I look for formulations containing ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids: the specific lipids your skin produces less of during environmental stress. These ingredients aren't aspirational skincare science; they're the structural components your barrier requires for protective function.

Serra's approach addresses this comprehensively:

The formulations focus on barrier support through ceramide-rich creams that mirror your skin's natural lipid composition. Each system pairs these ceramide-rich creams with hydrating serums (either HA+ for moisture retention or Vita C Lipid for brightening alongside hydration) and gentle cleansing that preserves rather than strips protective oils.

Four pre-bundled systems provide targeted support:

Serra Restore & Replenish (R1,365, save R460): For dry, dehydrated skin requiring deep moisture retention. Combines Serra Restore Cream with Corrective Hydrating HA Plus and Serra Cleansing.

Serra Restore & Revive (R1,530, save R515): For dull, tired-looking skin alongside dryness. Pairs Serra Restore with Correctives Vita C Lipid and Serra Cleansing.

Serra Soothing & Revive (R1,710, save R575): For reactive, sensitive skin experiencing winter stress. Combines Serra Soothing Cream with Correctives Vita C and Serra Cleansing.

Serra Soothing & Replenish (R1,545, save R520): For very dry, reactive skin requiring intensive support. Pairs Serra Soothing with Correctives HA+ and Serra Cleansing Gel.

The pre-bundled approach removes decision paralysis whilst ensuring you receive complete barrier support rather than piecemeal product selection. Each bundle provides the essential trio for winter barrier resilience: cleansing, hydration, and lipid supplementation.

Available throughout the winter season. View complete bundle details:https://bit.ly/4v2uqnl

Your bespoke skin journey adapts to seasonal changes, ensuring your barrier receives appropriate support regardless of environmental conditions.

Have you identified whether your winter skin experiences primarily dehydration (tightness, dullness) or dryness (flaking, rough texture), or both? Understanding this helps determine which bundle addresses your specific barrier needs.

What menopause does to your skin barrier, and why it matters for everything else.

One of the less-discussed effects of the menopausal transition is what it does to the skin's barrier function. As oestrogen levels decline, sebum production decreases, natural moisturising factors become less effective, and the barrier (your skin's outermost protective layer) becomes more permeable.

This has a cascade effect. Moisture evaporates more readily. Irritants pe*****te more easily. Products that your skin previously tolerated without difficulty may suddenly cause sensitivity or reactivity. The skin is not becoming weaker; it is responding to a fundamental shift in its hormonal environment.

Supporting barrier function during this transition is not a cosmetic consideration. It is the foundation from which all other skincare works. Ceramides (the lipids that form the skin's protective seal), gentle cleansing, and richer moisturisers become more relevant. Layering multiple actives becomes less so.

We cover this in detail in our clinical guide on menopause and your skin, including what changes in the barrier during this transition and how to adjust your skin journey accordingly.
