On May 24, 2025, the 78th World Health Assembly adopted a landmark resolution that officially recognized rare diseases as a global public health and equity priority. This moment marked the culmination of years of advocacy and the beginning of a new era for over 300 million people worldwide living with a rare or undiagnosed condition.

This is a huge victory for everyone living with a rare condition. It means the world now officially recognizes rare diseases as a global health priority, and that action must be taken to ensure better diagnosis, care, support, and inclusion—for all of us.

𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮.

This resolution gives us a platform to push for:

- A National Rare Disease Strategy that includes early diagnosis, financial protection, and long-term care;
- Improved social recognition and support including within schools, the workplace and within the general community;
- The inclusion of rare diseases in our National Health Insurance (NHI) plans;
- Stronger public awareness to reduce stigma and build empathy.
