MOET Afrikaanse verslae kan skrywe.

Another take on fasting
Renowned practitioner and author Shelton published many books in the 20th century, inter alia

From which comes the following quote:
Levanzin lost no strength during his thirty-one days' fast as shown by the dynamometric tests. On the last day of the fast, this non-athletic man, used to taking no regular exercise except walking, was able to press up to one hundred and twenty pounds with his left hand.

Fasting (intermittent, IF, or alternate day, ADF) may be the newest diet craze rivaling calorie restriction (CR) to increase longevity and improve health. Recent reports have shown that fasting diets can confer health benefits similar to (or even greater than) those of chronic calorie restriction (CR), without reducing the number of calories consumed relative to an ad libitum diet.
It seems apparent that excess energy in the diet (energy is measured in Joules or Calories) speeds up the aging process. This might be due to the accumulation of weak and sick cells. When cells have an “easy life” with plenty of nutrients, those that would naturally die and be replaced by new cells, survive.
Having to care for many old, debilitated cells is a burden on the body. By fasting intermittently, one kind of “euthanize” the damaged cells and thus create space for new, healthy cells to take their place.
Studies on vitamins, minerals and other substances marketed under the claim of promoting health has also unexpectedly found a reduction in life expectancy: By taking “supplements” you might actually keep these sick and weak cells alive and thus increase the burden on the body.
Happy fasting!

Some Science behind fasting
Well, since I have been fasting every Monday (That is, from some time on Sunday until some time on Tuesday or later) for more than 2 decades now, Monday is a good day for this topic.
When we look at
http://www.denverpost.com/recommended/ci_11808927
"There is something kind of magical about starvation," says Dr. Marc Hellerstein, a professor of endocrinology, metabolism and nutrition at the University of California at Berkeley, who studies fasting.
And bear in mind that the Pharmaceutical industry, which makes most of their money from disease, is also the biggest sponsor of medical schools and research..
Adds Mark P. Mattson, chief of the laboratory of neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging: "In normal health subjects, moderate fasting — maybe one day a week …. — will have health benefits for most anybody.
So it is not just in laboratory rats or mice that this works (They have demonstrated about 50% longer life, more energy and higher fertility rates) that benefit from regularly skipping a day of food.. it has proven beneficial in people too.
There is unfortunately preciously little real scientific research on the subject, possible because none of the usual sponsors of research can see any possible profit from such research. But on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting
According to Dr. Mark P. Mattson, chief of the laboratory of neurosciences at the US National Institute on Aging, fasting every other day (intermittent fasting) shows beneficial effects in mice as strong as those of caloric-restriction diets,[2] and a small study conducted on humans at the University of Illinois indicates the same results [3] According to the US National Academy of Sciences, other health benefits include stress resistance, increased insulin sensitivity, reduced morbidity, and increased life span.
Whilst I do not recommend fasting for longer than 3-5 days without supervision, and never more than 40 days at a time, I have allowed one patient to do 45 days in one stretch... and he lost 45 kilograms in this time while resolving his heart and kidney failure as well as his asthma. Anecdotal evidence, perhaps, but enough for me to persist!

Continued research keeps confirming in people what was earlier found in laboratory animals: Fasting keeps you healthier and slows down the aging process.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549
Scientists are uncovering evidence that short periods of fasting, if properly controlled, could achieve a number of health benefits, as well as potentially helping the overweight,
As well as cutting calories you have to cut your protein intake. Not entirely - that would be a very bad idea. It's about sticking to recommended guidelines, something most of us fail to do.
It has long been known than eating less increases life expectancy and general health. So, apparently, does intermittent fasting even without limiting food overall:
http://www.pnas.org/content/100/10/6216.full.pdf
.intermittent fasting resulted in beneficial effects that met or exceeded those of caloric restriction including reduced serum glucose and insulin levels and increased resistance of neurons in the brain to excitotoxic stress.
If this sounds all too complicated, just note that the measures that improved are all known to be related to the rate of aging:
http://ruanz3.hubpages.com/hub/Intermittent-Fasting-Can-Help-Slow-Down-The-Aging-Process
Research by the University of Illinois in Chicago has shown that the reduction of calorie intake, especially alternate day fasting, not only helps in losing weight but has other beneficial effects as well. After an eight week period of fasting, bad cholesterol, blood fat, blood pressure and heart rate was down, which are all key risk indicators for heart disease.
Thus the philosophy: Each day you eat, you become a day older. Each day you fast, you become a day younger (within limits of course!) or don’t age..
