Our Story

In 2015 two students, Mario Tomar and Haby Ka , studying at the African Leadership Academy (ALA) founded Yellow Shea, a natural hair products enterprise. Mário had begun producing natural hair products in his room since he arrived at the school and had thought about expanding this idea and making it something bigger. In Senegal, Haby produced hair accessories and was keen on changing the unauthentic beauty standards and perceptions of African hair that she grew up around. The Entrepreneurial Leadership department at the African Leadership Academy provided the two founders with the perfect platform, an Original Idea for Development (OID) project, where students would come up with an idea to solve a problem in their communities and create a business plan for the solution they came up with. Later on, during the Student Ideas Festival in 2015 whereby the different entrepreneurial projects from ALA students are celebrated, Yellow Shea won first place for an outstanding pitch and the idea was then incorporated into the student enterprise program at the school. This saw the addition of new members to the team; Oreoluwa Onabanjo , T-noy T-noy and David Lewis. Currently, Yellow Shea produces and sells natural hair products made from African raw materials and sells them to the ALA community. The enterprise also has a set of social media platforms that aim to share content around its product line, African hair and seeks to create a platform for African hair and beauty expression and appreciation. In future, Yellow Shea aims to expand its reach and influence by attaining its goal of becoming a Pan-African hair company.
