Why I Speak Up: My Journey as a Young Activist

By Zinhle Mphothulo

Growing up in one of South Africa’s perceived dangerous townships, I always noticed the social injustices and inequalities that surround us. I saw how our system favors those who fit a certain demographic and perhaps race, but I also saw why some of our people resorted to crime, either as a means to support their families or because they felt pressured into their actions.

I talked about these inequalities every chance I got, even in high school. But it wasn’t until I entered university that I truly reconnected with my activism. I realized why I was so passionate about speaking on these issues: because they are not spoken about enough in the media. University helped me find my voice and gave me the language and confidence to express the pain and hope I carried.

I’ve learned and continue to learn how socially constructed our society is. I found my voice, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had. Not many young Black South Africans are privileged enough to access those same opportunities, and that is why I speak up.

Activism, to me, is more than just protests, aesthetics, or awareness campaigns. It’s about advocating for those who haven’t found their voice yet. It’s about community. It’s about Ubuntu.

As a Communication student, I have come to understand that communication is the root of problem-solving. It enables change not just by speaking, but by listening, writing, storytelling, and connecting with others.

Whether through digital storytelling, writing, or organising events, I believe youth activism plays a powerful role in reshaping society. Young voices shouldn’t be silenced. We shouldn’t be told to “learn to live with” injustice. Social constructs can and will change.

I aim to use my platform to spark dialogue about gender-based violence, youth unemployment, and broader social inequalities.

Activism has given me hope. It has given me purpose and courage. It’s the fire that fuels my studies, my voice, and my vision for an equal and safe South Africa. 🇿🇦
