DEAR GOD ARE PEOPLE REALLY THIS STUPID Just because something is trending doesn't mean it's safe. The latest social media trend? Blackout tattoos—covering huge areas of the body in solid black ink. Before following the trend, it's worth asking: what are we putting into our bodies? Research has shown that tattoo pigments don't just stay in the skin. Tiny ink particles can travel to your lymph nodes, where they may remain for years. Studies have also linked tattooing with chronic inflammatory reactions, allergic responses, and researchers are investigating possible associations with conditions such as lymphoma and some autoimmune diseases. While these studies do not prove that tattoos cause cancer or autoimmune disease, they raise important questions about the long-term effects of injecting large amounts of pigment into the body. A blackout tattoo uses an enormous amount of ink compared with a typical tattoo, yet we still don't fully understand the long-term health implications of that level of exposure.
