UPDATE ON PLANNED WATER MAINTENANCE AND SUPPLY RESTORATION
23 JULY 2026

Matjhabeng Local Municipality wishes to inform residents that the planned maintenance on the bulk water supply system has been completed successfully, with all scheduled maintenance activities concluded as planned.

The Municipality, in collaboration with Vaal Central Water, is currently restoring the water distribution system. Residents are advised that water supply will be restored in phases as the network is gradually recharged and reservoir levels recover to the required operating capacity.

CURRENT SYSTEM STATUS.

• The Balkfontein Water Treatment Plant is operating normally.

• Pumping from the De Erf Reservoir to the Koppie Reservoir is currently operating at approximately 45% capacity. Once adequate water levels have been restored at the De Erf Reservoir, pumping will be increased to 100%, which is expected by 10:00 today.

• The Welkom Ring Main was completely depleted during the maintenance period.
Consequently, the recovery of the water distribution system serving the Greater Welkom area is expected to take approximately 16 hours, with full restoration of water supply anticipated by tomorrow morning.

• Water supply to Hennenman, Phomolong, Ventersburg and Mmamahabane is also expected to be restored tomorrow morning. This is because sufficient capacity must first be built up at the Koppie Old High Level Reservoir before the Hennenman pumping system can be brought back into operation.

• Water tankers will remain deployed throughout today to provide relief to affected communities and are expected to be withdrawn tomorrow once normal water supply has been restored.
Water tankers will, however, remain available in Ventersburg and Mmamahabane until the water supply has been fully stabilised.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and assure communities that every effort is being made to restore normal water supply as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible.
