Waste or a smart business?

Many of you first heard about baby corn from this page. Some even said I was harvesting maize too early because I didn't know what I was doing.

Here's the truth.
Baby corn is harvested just 55-60 days after planting, before the kernels develop. You're harvesting the young cob, not grain maize.

The interesting part is that,One plant can produce multiple baby corns. We harvested this field more than five times before finally cutting the remaining green stalks for silage. So from one crop, we got baby corn for the export market and quality livestock feed.

This photo was taken in Kirinyaga, Kenya. The green plants behind me had already been harvested four times, and two days later we were back for another round before turning it into silage.

Prioritize problems by importance and tackle them one by one whether it’s a disease in the field, equipment breakdown, or supply chain issue. Quick, practical thinking often separates thriving farms from struggling ones.

Running a farm is running a complex business. Success requires strong organization.
Stay on top of daily tasks, schedules, records, and resources. Much of farming depends on effective management of time, products, and labor. Good systems and routines prevent small issues from becoming major setbacks.

Be Good with Numbers

Numbers matter more in farming than many realize. Successful farmers track finances, inventory, budgets, costs, and profits with confidence.
Strong financial skills help you make informed decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and measure what’s truly working. Even plant growth calculations and yield projections rely on accurate data poor number skills can quietly erode your margins.

Be a Good Salesman

No matter how well you produce, you still need to sell. To keep your farm profitable and growing, you must attract and retain customers.
