HOW WE FOUND OURSELVES IN THIS STATE AS A NATION AND MY SUGGESTION FOR THE WAY FORWARD

Allow me to share with you why we are where we are and what we have to do as the way forward.
Let me share a bit of Zambian history to help us understand things better. From our independence as a Nation, the Zambian economy has gone through different changes depending on the government of the day.

In order to fulfill the pre-independence promises, the new leaders in 1964, decided to use the reserves they inherited for free education, medical facilities, water and sanitation and the development of general infrastructure.

There was also the policy of Zambianization slightly after independence where almost all major industries were put under state control under the Mulungushi Economic Reforms of 1968 and the Matero Economic Reforms of 1969
Such policies coupled with the leadership code curtailed the culture of entrepreneurship among most Zambians.

Generally before 1991 most economic policies were pro socialist in nature. This means that education was free including School exercise books, free medical services, in other words citizens depended so much on the government for almost everything.
After 1991 we had free market economic policies. The corresponding rise in self-employment initiatives gave rise to the birth of Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial tendencies which resulted in the growth of the informal sector in Zambia.
An increase in innovation, creativity and imagination in a free and liberalized economy led to increased competition. The unfortunate part though was that the mindset of the citizenry still remained pro socialist unknowingly despite becoming a free market economy hence the call for the ‘BOMA iyanganepo’ on almost everything.
This pro socialist mindset in a free market economy coupled up with the entitlement syndrome, we have found ourselves where we are. I don’t blame those who feel entitled to being employed because they are promised employment from the first grade. The recuring message through Primary, Secondary and tertiary is that you will get employed after school. The frustration then comes in when you graduate with this mindset then society tells you that there is no job for you. I share the frustrations of these graduates but I believe the narrative would have been different if we had this entrepreneurial mindset as we grew up.

As we get set for the future I strongly suggest that we hold hands to bring about this entrepreneurial revolution as this is the only way we will curb the challenges of unemployment. We need concerted efforts to change this current mindset. Maybe Zambia has been waiting for a time when you will be alive to contribute to the betterment of our country. We cannot continue being spectators in our own economy and be reduced to just tools of production.
Tables have drastically changed from what it was in the 70s and 80s. Back then, when one graduated a job was already waiting for them and that is no longer the case in our current state with over fifty registered Universities from the two we had about 30 years ago. The increased population without the corresponding growth in the economy has brought us thus far.

I am looking forward and working towards a time when the majority of the citizenry will hold hands and decide to aggressively take charge of our economy. We cannot continue just being spectators in our own economy and I believe with the right mindset we will have this attained. I look forward to a time when success will be celebrated in this country and not demonized as satanists. It might interest you to note that as of this morning Zambia has only thirty people worth over $10million and only two that are worth over $100million. According to Credit Suisse China had 38 millionaires in 2000 and 5,279,467 millionaires in 2020. This underscores that we truly need to embrace the call for entrepreneurship as this accounts for 74% of the world’s millionaires. In similar way as China did it, so can we.

Join this entrepreneurial revolution and support this cause. Together we will change the narrative of this Nation. On the 4th of July, 2022 we together with those that believe in this movement will be at Nation Heroes stadium for the Redefining Masterclass. I hope to see you there.
