I was dating this lady in the village, you know, the kind of dating with no clear direction. It was in the early stages of the relationship when both of us were trying to put their best foot forward.

One day, the lady informed me at short notice that she was coming to visit me that very day. As a man, it's customary to treat a lady well when she visits. In the village, the most esteemed refreshment was soda. I thought about getting a bottle of Fanta and some donuts, but my pocket couldn't permit that.

The money I could access would only buy a 300ml soda, leaving me with a mere balance of Ksh5. Five Kenya shillings hardly amounted to anything. I attempted to reach out to my network, but the old adage "Show me your friends and I will show you who you are" resonated with me. If all your five friends are broke, you miscounted – they are six.

Isn't it fascinating how adversity often sparks extra creativity? I came up with an idea that actually worked. There was this powder juice called Juicy Cola, sold in sachets for five Kenya shillings each. So, I bought one 300ml Fanta and Juicy Cola, got an extra bottle and mixed the powder in water and even covered it up to make it look like I had two bottles of soda.

I set the table, and just before she arrived, I started sipping on my Juicy Cola. The reason? Sodas are carbonated with carbon dioxide, which makes that distinctive noise when opened. Obviously, mine didn't make any noise, and I didn't want that embarrassing moment. She took the soda, assuming I was having the same. I can only imagine what would have happened if she had tried to be romantic and demanded a sip from my bottle. Anyway, I told her the story later, and she burst into laughter.

Today is Valentine's Day, and many people are going the extra mile, even borrowing, to please their loved ones or make a statement. My advice is simple: be yourself. Show your love at your own pace; you have more than 300 other days in the year to do so. If you have the means, why not treat someone? But always remember, when you strive excessively to please someone, you may end up an enemy of yourself. Don't climb the tree beyond the leaves; operate within your means.
