KUNAKA MUKAU HAILS MBUYA NEHANDA’S ENDURING LEGACY
By News Byte Zw
Youth politician Russell Kunaka Mukau has called for renewed national reflection on the enduring legacy of Mbuya Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana, describing her as a defining symbol of Zimbabwe’s resistance, spiritual identity and liberation history.
In a detailed statement, Mukau traced Nehanda’s journey from her birth around 1840 in Mazowe to her rise as a revered spiritual medium of the ancestral spirit Mbuya Nehanda, a guide deeply connected to the land and the Shona people’s cultural identity.
He said Nehanda emerged as a pillar of unity and defiance when the British South Africa Company, led by Cecil John Rhodes, invaded Zimbabwe, seizing land and imposing taxes and forced labour that tore communities apart. As anger mounted in 1896, Mukau noted, Nehanda prophesied that the ancestors demanded resistance, sparking the First Chimurenga alongside other spiritual leaders such as Sekuru Kaguvi, Mlimo and Chaminuka.
Mukau said despite being outgunned, the Shona and Ndebele fighters drew strength from Nehanda’s spiritual leadership. “She became more than a leader — she was a voice of divine justice,” he said.
Nehanda and Kaguvi were later captured in 1897 after the uprising was suppressed. She was accused of authorising the killing of a British officer, Henry Pollard, and subsequently sentenced to death. Mukau highlighted her unbroken resolve in captivity, including her famous declaration, “Mapfupa angu achamuka” (my bones shall rise again), before her ex*****on in 1898.
According to Mukau, those prophetic words later fuelled the Second Chimurenga of the 1960s and 70s, as freedom fighters identified themselves as Vana vaNehanda, drawing courage from her legacy.
He said Zimbabwe’s 1980 independence fulfilled Nehanda’s prophecy, cementing her status as “one of the mothers of the revolution,” a figure now immortalised through monuments, schools and cultural expressions.
Mukau said Nehanda’s story remains a reminder that “true power lies not in weapons but in belief — belief in justice, freedom and the people’s ability to rise again.”
He added that each generation must confront its own struggles against injustice, poverty and oppression with the same courage that defined Nehanda’s resistance.
“Her spirit still walks the land, and her courage still calls to us all,” Mukau said.
