Q: is hyperpigmentation permanent?
A: the duration depends on its underlying causes, the type of hyperpigmentation, and how it’s treated.

Types of hyperpigmentation:
- post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): this is a result of inflammation or injury to the skin eg acne, burns, cuts etc. Takes a while to fade.
- melasma: normally triggered by hormonal changes, it is also more stubborn and takes a while to treat.
- sun spots or age spots: caused by prolonged sun exposure
- freckles: mostly genetic and becomes prominent with sun exposure
