*FOOD POISONING*
There have been many reported cases of food poisoning in South Africa over the last 24 months. Let us learn more about food poisoning and how we can prevent or manage it. These cases highlight the plight of consuming quality products while protecting ourselves and our children.
Food poisoning, also known as foodborne illness, is a condition that occurs when you eat food or drinks that are contaminated with harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or other pathogens. These pathogens can cause a range of symptoms, from mild discomfort to life-threatening illness.
*Common causes of food poisoning:*
1. Bacteria: Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Listeria, and Staphylococcus aureus.
2. Viruses: Norovirus, Rotavirus, and Hepatitis A.
3. Parasites: Trichinella, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium.
4. Toxins: Botulism, produced by Clostridium botulinum, and Staphylococcal enterotoxin.
5. Chemicals: Food additives, pesticides, and heavy metals.
*Symptoms of food poisoning:*
1. Nausea and vomiting
2. Diarrhea or bloody stools
3. Abdominal cramps and pain
4. Fever, chills, or sweating
5. Headache and fatigue
6. Dizziness or lightheadedness

*Common foods associated with food poisoning:*
1. Undercooked meat, poultry, or seafood
2. Unpasteurized dairy products or juices
3. Raw or sprouted beans and grains
4. Unpeeled fruits and vegetables
5. Processed meats, like hot dogs and sausages
6. Raw or undercooked eggs
7. Leftover food that's not stored properly
*Prevention tips:*
1. Wash hands frequently
2. Store food at proper temperatures
3. Cook food thoroughly
4. Chill food promptly
5. Avoid cross-contamination
6. Use safe water and raw materials
7. Avoid high-risk foods, especially for vulnerable populations (pregnant women, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems)
*Treatment:*
1. Fluid replacement to prevent dehydration
2. Rest and recovery
3. Antibiotics or antiparasitic medications (if necessary)
4. Hospitalization (in severe cases)
*When to seek medical attention:*
1. Severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or swallowing
2. Vomiting blood or bloody stools
3. Fever above 101.5°F (38.6°C)
4. Signs of dehydration (excessive thirst, dark urine, dizziness)
5. Symptoms lasting more than 3 days
6. Pregnant or immunocompromised individuals with symptoms
